Understanding Proxy Verification & Latency
Finding a proxy IP online is simple, but verifying that it can establish a secure, low-latency socket connection requires testing before placing it into your scraper pool, anti-detect browser, or network proxy settings.
What This Diagnostic Tests
When you click Test Proxy, our checker performs a two-stage diagnostic test:
- Handshake Latency: Measures how many milliseconds (ms) it takes to initiate TCP or SOCKS negotiation with the remote proxy socket. Fast proxies typically respond under 250ms, while acceptable scraping proxies register between 250ms and 800ms.
- Payload Transmission & HTTP Status: The engine sends a standardized HTTPS payload through the proxy to determine whether SSL tunneling succeeds without termination or gateway rejection.
- Anonymity Header Leak Inspection: By inspecting the remote outbound headers (such as
X-Forwarded-ForandVia), we classify whether the server functions as an Elite (High Anonymous) proxy or exposes your origin address as a Transparent proxy.
Difference Between Proxy Anonymity Levels
- Elite / High Anonymity (Level 1): The target web server cannot detect that you are using a proxy, and your real IP is completely concealed. Perfect for scraping, SEO monitoring, and multi-accounting.
- Anonymous (Level 2): The target web server knows you are using a proxy (via proxy headers), but your original IP address remains concealed.
- Transparent (Level 3): Your original IP address is transmitted in the request headers (e.g.,
X-Forwarded-For). These proxies provide caching or firewall bypass, but zero privacy.
Troubleshooting Proxy Failures
If the test reports that your proxy is offline or timed out, review these common issues:
- Wrong Protocol: Attempting to connect to a SOCKS5 proxy via HTTP protocol will fail the initial negotiation handshake.
- Firewall or Port Blocking: Certain public networks block outbound connections on non-standard ports (such as 1080, 8080, or 3128).
- Ephemerality: Free public proxies experience high traffic volumes. If a node is unresponsive, select another verified node from our hourly-updated free proxy list.
